“I feel anxious” is one of the biggest discovery for me. The moment I understand, I am able to do something, anything that can actually help. Before this awareness, so much energy went into doing things that helped avoid accepting this fact. :(
Definitely echo writing and consuming less social media / news. Ultimately, what we eat in our mind shows up in our feelings and emotions.
One of the best things for my life has been keeping a detailed gratitude journal and reading it over everyday. It shifts my mind to stop chasing and being anxious to remember what I have.
Empathising with you although I live across the pond. I hope you find some strength and repose from the anxiety by practising these tips. I've veered dangerously into getting hooked to the news, sometimes 1-2 hours in a day (it's easy to doom-scroll the news when commuting). Thankfully I caught myself before getting sucked any deeper.
it's so easy to, especially when getting it on IG or TikTok. I still like to keep informed, and find the best way to do that avoid doomscrolling is to follow a few writers on Substack that cover the stuff I care about. They're not news-based, but write about timely things with great analysis. For example Paul Krugman.
Good call! I'll train myself to check the analyses on Substack rather than impulsively open Reddit for every new thing, it seems that my chaotic nerves "like" feeling triggered by the news?
Late to the party on this one --I don't know how I missed this but it's prolly b/c of the substack algo.
The trick is to use feelings as signals for change rather than letting them define your identity
I'm currently in the process of going thru some huge change in my life, it's a traumatic event that I won't wish on anyone. --and it's crippling. to feel all these feelings.
There are moments that I feel that it's part of my identity.
What questions do you ask yourself when you fall into that bad place of attaching the anxiety, depression and feeling of lack to at least get out of that headspace?
Thank you Jaryd for being candid with your emotions. I can so relate from what you're saying.
I agree, and at times, it can also feel like when you're in the slumps time seems to pass by longer.
I've succumed to always keeping environment noisy --which can be helpful just to quiet the mind but it's a temporary fix, really, what i did find helpful (for now) is to sit in silence.
and let the thoughts come in.
Thanks for the encouragement, there is light at the end of this.
Loved this one!

Love that—what an awesome daily “meditation” to keep you grounded. So often the small things that make the big difference.

Wishing you all the strength through it, Radrad. It’s never helpful to hear it in the moment, but time heals all wounds.
