I have the fear of doing nothing. What if my skills erode? What if my competition catches up with the new stuff and I’m left behind? Reading this gives me a lot of perspective on why you have to reset and refocus. The Asian work culture never lets you do that but I guess we have to make the effort to do nothing. Thanks for writing this!
I have the same fear, which is why this essay was in many ways is also a letter to self!
The unproductive moment is something I've always felt guilt about especially when you see everyone telling you about the things they're doing online. This was very true when I was doing my startup. But it's about doing both, and believing that even if you made time to do nothing for a full hour a day, it's going to make no difference to the state of your business, but it will make a substantial difference to the state of you...and if you're the founder...that reset and gap to find insight CAN make a real difference to your business. This is why NOTHING often leads to SOMETHING...or everything :)
As Seneca said, "A balanced combination of the two attitudes is what we want; the active man should be able to take things easily; while the man who is inclined towards repose should be capable of action. Ask nature: she will tell you she made both night and day".
A good mind is as important as a good business. The first often leads to the second, but the second not necessarily the first.
Eye opening. Honestly I’ve never thought about it like that. It’s about controlling your mind and telling yourself that you’re fine and doing nothing doesn’t mean you’re unproductive. Thanks for taking your time to explain it in-depth.
"The space between stimulus and response is where wisdom lives."
respect the gap 🌞
